FDA Panel Gives Vioxx Successor Thumbs Down
A panel of federal health advisors recommended that the Food and Drug Administration should not approve etoricoxib (Arcoxia), a painkiller in the same class of as Vioxx. Experts cited a potential risk of stroke and heart attack, as well as the lack of long-term safety data concerning the osteoarthritis medication as the reason for the 20-to-1 decision against government approval.

CDC Says Gonorrhea Is Drug-Resistant
Health officials are recommending new drugs to treat gonorrhea, the STD that is steadily becoming more resistant to the longtime standard antibiotic used to treat the condition. The US CDC says fluoroquinolones (Cipro) has been the most common antibiotic used to fight the bacterial disease since the 1990s, but they are now recommending a different class of antibiotics called cephalosporins, as gonorrhea has grown increasingly resistant to those treatments.

People with FTO Gene Tend to Weigh More
Research published in the journal Science reports that scientists have discovered that people who carry two copies of a variation of the gene called FTO, weighed an average of 3.2 kg (7 lbs)  more than people who lack it. Researchers suspect the genes are involved with appetite or the burning of calories but admit it remains unclear exactly what they do or how they work.
