About the PSS Medication Management Training for Nurses in Nursing Homes

PSS has previously run medication management training for nurses in a classroom based setting. To make the training more accessible, the modules will be made available on this E-learning platform.  

This program aims to equip nurses with operational skills in medication management in the nursing home context as well as clinical and medication knowledge pertaining to elderly. The cost will be a nominal fee of $10 per sign-up per module to cover the administration fees.

Note: This E-Learning is meant for Nurses (RNs and ENs), any attempt made by other professions such as Pharmacists will not be eligible for any accreditation of CE points.


Instructions to access the modules:

If you do not have a PSS account, you will need to have to create one. To do this, you will be required to purchase a module as a guest first.

  1. Click on the required module
  2. Select “Add to Cart” at the bottom of the page
  3. Select “cart”, on the top right hand corner of the page
  4. Select “checkout”
  5. Complete your account information.


An auto-generated email will be sent (please check the junk folder if not received) with your login details.


For Points accreditation, you will need to update:

  • Full name (As per IC)
  • SNB number
  • Institution
  • Email address

To do this:

  1. Go to “My account” at the top left hand corner.
  2. Select  “edit profile”
  3. Complete the information as above


No. of CE points: 1 CE point* will be awarded per module


Instructions to access purchased products:

  1. Login to your PSS account (skip if you are already logged in)
  2. Select “My account” at the top right of the page
  3. Select “My online products”
  4. Look for the online module that you would like to access/download and “open” the chosen module
  5. Select “view” in the module page to access the online module accordingly

1. Safe Medication Administration

In this module, participants will learn about safe practices during each step of the medication administration process, common errors which may occur, how to avoid them and the process of medication error reporting
 

2. Medications and the Risk of Falls 

In this module, participants will learn how to identify who are at high risk for falls, the medications associated with falls in older adults and how to prevent falls due to medication use.
 

3. Vaccination Schedule in the Elderly

 In this module, participants will:

- Identify the recommended vaccines for the elderly based on the MOH adult vaccination schedule

-Understand the coverage vaccines are able to provide against various infectious diseases

-Gain a clearer understanding of the timings of the vaccination schedule

-Identify precautions and contraindications for the various vaccinations
 

4. Common Infections

In this module, participants will:

-Gain an overview of how common infections such as colds, flu, pneumonia, etc., are transmitted

- Learn the basic pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment used

- Learn the common drugs/drug classes used in treatment

- Recognise the most common side effects and precautions of the commonly used drugs
 

5. Waste Management

In this module, participants will learn:

- About the different types of waste and how to identify them

- How appropriate waste management affects both the environment and their own health

-How to handle and dispose the different types of waste

-How to minimise waste generation
 

6. Dermatology I

In this module, participants will learn:

- The types of non-infectious skin conditions common in the nursing home setting such as pruritis, xerosis and atopic dermatitis

- The causes, signs and symptoms, risk factors, complications of these skin conditions

- Understand the pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of these skin conditions and 

- Identify ways to prevent the development of these skin conditions
 

7. Dermatology II

In this module, participants will learn: 

- The causes, signs and symptoms, risk factors and complications of infectious skin conditions such as fungal infection, herpes zoster and scabies

- The pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of these skin conditions and 

- Identify ways to prevent the development of these skin conditions     

 

8. Prescribing Terminology and Drug Information

In this module, participants will: 

- Understand the importance of appropriate prescribing terminologies

- Learn the standard abbreviations used in Singapore

- Look into MOH recommendations on which abbreviations should be used or avoided.

- Learn to minimise medication error when transcribing or interpreting medication order

- Be familiarize with common terminologies used in drug monographs

- Get an overview of the common drug references used in Singapore

 

9. Gastrointestinal (GI) Conditions in the Elderly

In this module, participants will:

- Learn to identify the four common types of GI conditions in elderly

- Constipation

- Diarrhea

- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

- Peptic ulcer disease (PUD)

- Learn to identify the etiology, signs and symptoms, and risk factors of these conditions

- Gain understanding on the pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of GI conditions

- Identify ways to prevent these GI condition

 

There will be a pre and post test in each of the modules. A passing score of 75% for the post test is required to obtain a certification of participation. Up to 2 attempts for the post test are allowed.
