The HK DOH has asked the UK based drug maker GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) to call back Augmentin 375 mg tablets which contain detectable levels of plasticisers including diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP).

The government has also found di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and diisononyl phthalate (DINP) in the drug.

Recently, the health department has ordered the British drugmaker to recall a paediatric antibiotic after it discovered elevated levels of a cancer-causing plastic additive.

A spokesman for DH said the levels of plasticisers are considered unlikely to cause acute harmful effects if taken according to the recommended dosage.

"DH will seek Department of Justice's advice on possible legal actions against GSK," the spokesman said.

GSK has initiated an investigation to identify the source of the additives.
