An Australian-based drug company Acuvax has finally started clinical trials of its dengue vaccine.  This will be a phase 1 double-blind, placebo controlled safety study in healthy volunteers and will be conducted in USA. Trial subjects will tested for for virus neutralizing antibodies.
 
This marks a significant milestone in the fight against the menacing dengue fever which kills scores of people in mostly tropical countries. This monovalent vaccine  is said to be the first recombinant subunit vaccine for dengue to enter clinical studies.
Concurrently, Acuvax also announced that it started working with an investment company Terra Rossa for capital injection of US$1.25 million to the company.

 

• Swine Flu Trial Vaccine Appears Promising
Another Australian company Vaxine that started the world’s first clinical trials of recombinant vaccine against swine flu, has reported excellent safety data so far. The vaccine is designed to work through the production on antibodies against influenza virus. Currently, there are about 7 other trials of swine flu running in 5 countries concurrently. With the winter season in northern hemisphere arriving soon, the healthcare industry throughout the world is watching anxiously for some protection or “insurance” which might just be something becoming the most sought after cure, if the H1N1 virus mutate into some more virulent variant!
