Pharmacy Commencement Class Giving Charity Run 2009 - the first of its kind in the history of the NUS Department of Pharmacy, was specially organized to commemorate the journey of our lives in NUS.

It also signifies the unity and relationships which have been forged between us over the past 4 years as a family (pharmily). We recognized that we are only able to complete this entire journey together because of the continuous support provided by one another for each other. Hence, by raising funds through this charity run, our hope is that it will bring some comfort and relief to the less fortunate pharmacy students of current and future cohorts and they too, complete their journey and pass on this tradition.

Our pharmacy lecturers and staff participated enthusiastically in this fundraising event in a joint effort to reach our target of $2009. They either pledged an amount in support of the student runners, or ran together with us while we, the students, in turn, pledged an amount for every pharmacy lecturer who participated.

The 4.3km run was held on 17th April, 2009 at 6.30pm. It was truly an exciting and heart-warming sight to see a total of 99 people (77 students, 8 lecturers, 7 pharmacy staff and 7 graduate students) gathered at the loading/unloading bay outside the dispensing lab, doing warm-up exercises and getting ready for the run.

Excited runners, all full of energy and ready to hit the road!

At 6.30pm sharp, we were off for the run!

The run saw us flagging off at Science Drive 4 and we headed up towards NUH, Lower Kent Ridge Road. We then made a turn at South Buona Vista Rd and ran up the gradual slope leading towards Prince George's Park Residences. It was then a downhill run all the way till Business Link where we caught our breath and then went on to conquer the last two slopes at the Central Forum and Yusof Ishak House.

Our faces were all flushed and our tired bodies were soaked in sweat but the smiles on our faces were wide and we finally ended the event with a spontaneous Pharmacy Cheer!

The camaraderie of our class even extended to having three of our classmates, Eesang, Peirong and Choonhan who went for NOC, planning a run in conjunction with ours in Philadelphia and invited their NOC friends to run with them in the cold weather, and pledged a generous $200.90 right out of their own pockets!

In the end, we are proud to raise a whopping $4,733.90 from the overwhelming response and support from everyone for this event. This event was indeed a significant and memorable one to conclude the end of our 4 years of pharmacy education as a class.

We would like to thank our Head of Department, Prof Chan Sui Yung, who has been very supportive throughout this event, the lecturers, academic and non-academic staff who had participated in this event one way or another. Last but not least, our most heartfelt thanks to our dearest graduating class of 2009 without whom this event would not have been possible!
