Our new generation pharmacists together with guests of honour.

Dr. Lau Hong Choon, Director, Manpower Standards and Development Division, and Ms Ang Hui Gek, Chief Pharmacist, both from the Ministry of Health were invited to grace the occasion & add a contemporary perspective to the healthcare scene in Singapore, particularly in the pharmacy practice environment.

Dr. Lau in his speech to the new pharmacists stressed the need for continuing education and the importance of joining and supporting the professional bodies like PSS

This year’s training has been made more challenging, (not just for our committee at PSS, but also for each individual training institution), due to
• the larger group of trainees now graduate from NUS Pharmacy Department;
• the introduction of SPB’s competency standards for Pre-registration pharmacists to become registered pharmacists.

In view of these new standards, our PSS Pre-registration Pharmacists Training Committee revamped our training program to come up with a series of discussion topics and training sessions which we hope will complement the training that each individual training institution will be providing.

Our aim is that with these training sessions, all of you will be exposed to a wider range of topics, and that these will form the basis of learning for all of you as you journey through your professional lives.

In addition we hope that these training sessions will also serve as meeting-up sessions for everyone, whereby you may all share with one another the different ideas and experiences that each of you would have been exposed to at the different training institutions. We hope that this exchange of ideas and experiences will better equip each and everyone of you with the correct attitude and knowledge to continue on in your chosen area of practice.

As the training has now come to a close, we hope that all of you will have benefited, in one way or another, from these sessions. The committee is always trying to make the training relevant and useful, and we thank all of you for your frank and constructive feedback. We will definitely take them into consideration when we plan for the next round of training. Any of you who would like to join us in the training of the next batch of pre-registration pharmacists, you are warmly welcomed to do so.

The certificate of completion was presented to our new colleagues by PSS President, Mr. Ng Cheng Tiang, who also gave away prizes to 3 pre-regs who excelled in their projects:

1. Tan Jianming. “Impact of cyclosporine 2 hour level on the risk of developing cytomegalovirus infection in renal transplant recipient receiving cyclosporine and mycophenolic acid analogue based immunosuppression”. SGH Pharmacy.
