? HSA Advised Public Not to Consume “MENTALK” Candy

HSA has recently detected an undeclared chemical substance aminotadalafil in “Mentalk” candy. In the interest of public health and safety, HSA is issuing this urgent alert to the public not to buy or eat this confectionary. Aminotadalafil, which is chemically similar to tadalafil, can cause serious adverse reactions such as heart attacks and strokes in susceptible individuals. Heart patients who are on nitrate drugs may suffer severe hypotension which may be fatal.  The full press release together with the packshot of “Mentalk” by HSA can be read here.

? Proposed Rule to Provide Updated Information for Pregnancy & Breast-feeding Patients

As pharmacists, when it comes to giving advice about the safety of a specific drug for pregnant and lactating women who breast-feed, it’s often one of the most difficult tasks, simply because there is too scant , if any,  evidence or reports which allow us to  provide a clear advice to both the public or other healthcare professionals. The U.S. FDA has recently announced revisions to the prescribing information (or package insert) for prescription drugs (including biological products) to provide better information about the effects of medicines used during pregnancy and breast-feeding.
The proposed changes to prescription drug labelling would give healthcare professionals more comprehensive information for making prescribing decisions and for counseling women who are pregnant, breast-feeding, or of child-bearing age about using prescription medications. Full reporting can be found here.
