In the recently concluded SingHealth Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) 2008, our fellow pharmacy colleagues had a field day after winning 3 out of 4 Awards of open for competition in the Allied Health categories.

The winners of the various researches and presentations Awards were announced during the SGH Formal Dinner at the Grand Ballroom of the Ritz Carton Hotel. One of the luminaries gracing the Dinner and delivered the 15th SGH Dinner Lecture was Prof. Peter Agre - an American molecular biologist who was awarded the 2003 Nobel Prize in Chemistry (which he shared with Roderick MacKinnon) for his discovery of aquaporins.

One of the hotly contested Awards during the ASM 2008 was the Young Investigators Award. The Allied Health category was won by Mr Lim Tze Peng from SGH (together with other co-investigators including Dr. Andrea Kwa, Ms. Winnie Lee etc.) Tze Peng's winning research was focusing on "In Vitro Activity of Various Antimicrobials in Combination Against Carbapenem Resistant Acinetobacter Baumannii (AB)".

Interestingly, Tze Peng’s winning streak also prevailed in the Best Oral presentation category with his topic on  “Quantitative Assessment of Combination Antibiotic Therapy for Pan-Drug Resistant (PDR) Acinetobacter Baumannii (AB)”.

Heartiest congratulations to Lim Tze Peng and his team. We would like to also take this opportunity to congratulate Ms Ng Hong Yen for winning the Best Poster Award on the topic “Infections with Multi-drug Resistant Pathogens in Patients Receiving Treatment for Haematological Maglinancies - A Retrospective Review of Risk Factors and Outcomes”

On behalf of PSS, we would like to once again congratulate you and your team for putting together sterling efforts which helped make pharmacy profession an inspiration for many other colleagues, especially to our younger generations. We are not forgetting those who have put in their best efforts in the various studies but were not presented any Award, for it was the competitive spirit which would ultimately measure the spirit of excellence in scientific research, and every participation has indeed been a win on its own to improve the understanding and practice of our respective professions. Well done!
