In a conference call, the company president James V. Mazzo implicated possible contamination from production-line with a waterborne Ralstonia species at the manufacturing facility in China.
AMO said it has received reports regarding some consumers in Japan suffering eye irritation from using the contact lens solution but no reports from the United States. Further investigation led AMO officials to conclude that two of the China facility's four production lines were contaminated. The China facility would be closed for several weeks for sanitation. It is estimated that the recall will cost AMO US$40 to 45 million in revenues through the rest of 2006 and 2007 due to product returns, supply shortages and temporary loss of market share. AMO was spun off from Allergan Inc. in 2002.
