Community Pharmacist of the Year

Objectives:
  • To give due recognition to pharmacists who have excelled in the practice of Community Pharmacy
  • To identify leaders/role models in this area
  • To promote healthy competition amongst pharmacists
  • To encourage and promote excellence in the Pharmacy profession

 

Attributes
  • The candidate is one who mentors junior pharmacists and staff and demonstrates leadership qualities
  • Active involvement in community-based practice research/quality improvement related projects and publications will be accorded higher consideration
  • Has contributed significantly to his/her organisation in the area of Pharmacy practice.
  • Significant contributions to PSS will be accorded higher consideration

 

Eligibility and Nomination Procedure
  • Nominations can only be made by a member of PSS, preferably from the Community sector
  • The nominee must be a pharmacist and a member of PSS, with at least three years of working experience locally.
  • Nominations must be made on the prescribed Nomination form together with curriculum vitae of the nominee and letter of support/endorsement from his/her senior, supervisor or manager.

 

Judging
  • Evaluation will be made by a panel of judges appointed by PSS
  • Short-listed nominees may be interviewed by the panel

 

Presentation of Awards
  • The winner would receive a plaque, certificate and prize money of $1,000
  • The winner will be given free PSS Membership for one year

Hospital Pharmacist of the Year Award

Objectives
  • To give due recognition to pharmacists who have excelled in the area of hospital pharmacy
  • To identify leaders / role models in this area
  • To encourage and promote excellence in the pharmacy profession

 

Attributes
  • The candidate is someone who mentors junior pharmacists and staff and exhibits leadership qualities
  • Is actively involved in research / quality improvement related projects
  • Has contributed significantly to his / her dept / organization in the area of pharmacy practice
  • Significant contributions to the PSS is a bonus

 

Eligibility and Nomination Procedure
  • Nominations can only be made by a member of PSS and seconded by a pharmacist or Manager of a Hospital Pharmacy
  • The nominee must be a pharmacist and a member of PSS, with at least three years of working experience in a Hospital Pharmacy Practice locally.
  • Nominations must be made on the prescribed Nomination form together with curriculum vitae of the nominee and letter of support/endorsement from his/her senior, supervisor or manager.

 

Judging
  • Evaluation will be made by a panel of judges appointed by PSS
  • Short-listed nominees may be interviewed by the panel

 

Presentation of Awards
  • The winner would receive a plaque, certificate and prize money of $1,000

  • To encourage innovations, entrepreneurship and leadership in the industry
  • To encourage and promote excellence in the industry.

The Candidate is one who

  • who demonstrates leadership qualities and has made positive impact to his/her organization
  • Is actively involved in Pharmacy-related projects and activities
  • Made significant contributions to the Pharmacy profession.

 

Eligibility and Nomination Procedure
  • Nominations can only be made by a member of PSS
  • The nominee must be a pharmacist and a member of PSS, with at least three years of working experience, and must be from non-community/non-hospital sector.
  • Nominations must be made on the prescribed Nomination form together with curriculum vitae of the nominee.

 

Judging
  • Evaluation will be made by a panel of judges appointed by PSS
  • Short-listed nominees may be interviewed by the panel

 

Presentation of Awards
  • The winner would receive a plaque, certificate and prize money of $1,000

PSS Student Overseas Enrichment Award

Objectives
  • To assist pharmacy students to enrich their knowledge and experience of pharmacy learning through participation in overseas conferences, courses or training attachments
  • To share the knowledge and experience gained with other pharmacy students and pharmacists upon their return
  • To promote awareness of the Pharmaceutical Society of Singapore (PSS) in the minds of pharmacy students
  • To foster close ties and goodwill between PSS and NUSPS members

 

Eligibility  

Candidates must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Be a member of NUSPS and student member of PSS
  • Currently undertaking the Pharmacy course at NUS (1st, 2nd and 3rd Year Academic of study only)
  • Obtained good academic results and showed leadership qualities in the activities of NUSPS

 

Assessment Criteria
  • Contribution in NUSPS/PSS Activities
  • Leadership qualities
  • Understanding and vision of the Pharmacy Profession
  • Academic performance/achievements
  • Reference of attachment programme chosen and its benefits to the nominee

 

Terms and Conditions
  • Candidates have to source for themselves the overseas conference, course or training attachment for which they wish to participate in.
  • Candidates have to submit details of the overseas conference, course or training attachment with the application and the estimated cost involved.
  • Evidence of a paper acceptance, a letter from the hosting institution or course acceptance should be attached with the application.
  • Candidates will be required to attend an interview with the PSS awards election committee.
  • Upon return, successful candidates must submit a written report of at least a 1,000 words on what they have learnt from the overseas conference, course or training attachment to PSS and present a poster presentation at 
  • the PSS Annual Pharmacy Congress.
  • Three awards of up to S $1,000 each will be given by PSS annually if there are suitable candidates.

PSS Lifetime Achievement Award

In honour of the late Mr Koe Khoon Poh (1943-2014)

For the first time in the history of PSS, the PSS Lifetime Achivement Award was presented posthumously to honour a visionary leader, historian, mentor and father, Mr Koe Khoon Poh. The PSS Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to a pharmacist who has shown unstinting effort and relentless drive in uplifting the image and standing of the pharmacy profession, commitment, passion and dedication to the pharmacy calling and contributions to society. Minister Gan presented this award of the highest standing to Mr Koe's family on 18 October 2014.

Mrs Tan Shook Fong - PSS Innovation & Scientific Research Award

This award was presented by Mrs Tan Shook Fong, former Chief Pharmacist of Singapore and the Pharmaceutical Society of Singapore (PSS). This award was made possible through the generous donation of Mrs Tan Shook Fong. 

Purpose

The award is presented to an individual or team for a research project that has demonstrated innovation and significant impact on pharmacy practice and pharmaceutical sciences in Singapore. Pharmacy practice is broadly defined including areas such as outcomes, surveys, patient safety, standards validation, discovery of new side effects and incompatibilities and translational science applications. Pharmaceutical sciences combines a wide range of scientific disciplines that are critical to the discovery and development of new drugs and therapies. Pharmaceutical sciences can be broadly classified into the following categories – drug discovery and design, drug delivery, drug action, drug analysis, pharmacoeconomics, clinical sciences, regulatory affairs.

The innovations and discoveries shall not be limited by the above.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Registered pharmacist with the Singapore Pharmacy Council
  • Member of Pharmaceutical Society of Singapore
  • Applicant must be either the Principal or Co-Investigator of the project
  • Research must be carried out in accordance to ethical standards in Singapore and approved by the Institution Review Board where applicable
  • Project has financial or patient benefit impact and the project must have been completed not more than 12 months before 30 June of the year of application.

More about Mrs Tan Shook Fong

Mrs Tan Shook Fong was the former Chief Pharmacist, and Director of the Pharmaceutical Department from 1995 - 2003. She was also the President and Registrar of the then Singapore Pharmacy board. As the Chief Pharmacist, Mrs Tan’s top priorities included raising the standards of medication safety and pharmaceutical care to patients. Mrs Tan made significant contributions to the modernisation of hospital pharmacy which included computerised pharmacy dispensing systems, inpatient medication records, introduction of ready-to-use dispensing packs, customised total parenteral and enteral feeds. She was also instrumental in the set up of a centralised Drug Information Unit.

Mrs Tan was responsible for improving the drug registration process to enable drugs to be registered more quickly for the benefit of patients. Introductions to legislation on smoking control, cosmetics control and chinese proprietary medicine during Mrs Tan's time further enhanced the protection of public health.
 
In her illustrious career,  Mrs Tan published 32 scientific papers and a number of handbooks for use at hospitals and also presented her research papers at international conferences. She was subsequently appointed Special Pharmaceutical Advisor when the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) was formed.
 
In recognition of her dedicated and exemplary service in her field, Mrs Tan was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Silver) in 2003. In 2009, Mrs Tan was awarded the Distinguished Science Alumni Award by the National University of Singapore.
 
After her retirement in 2003, Mrs Tan continued to be active in the pharmacy field. She held various positions including Chairperson of the Singapore Pharmacy Board Continuing Pharmacy Education Accreditation Committee, Consultant Pharmacist at Haw Par Healthcare Ltd and Advisor to Singapore Pharmacy Board and Pharmaceutical Society of Singapore. Mrs Tan is also Honorary Secretary to Friends of the Museums Singapore and was a pioneer in setting up a structured programme for the training of Museum Docents for the National Heritage Board.
