4 & 5 January, 2014 |
Training venue : Ngee Ann Polytechnic,
535 Clementi Road, Singapore 599489
Course Synopsis:
To be successful in research, pharmacists require in-depth knowledge of research design that allows achievement of adequate power, for detection of statistically and clinically significant differences. In addition, proficiency in data collection and analysis is necessary to translate the results into valuable information for practice and/or policymaking. This course will familiarize pharmacists with the rudiments of statistical theory. It aims to sharpen the set of skills needed for collection of relevant and robust research data, critical analysis of data and effective data presentation in professional and academic settings.
At the end of the workshop, participants should be able to:
- Know how they can contribute to clinical research
- Identify research problems
- Interpret data using the most appropriate statistical method
- Evaluate the clinical significance of data obtained
- Understand how to translate research data to create an impact in current clinical practice
- Justify their contributions as a clinician scientist
- Be familiar with how and where to publish a research paper

Department of Pharmacy
Singapore General Hospital
Dr. Lim Tze Peng is a principal pharmacist with the Singapore General Hospital since his pre-registration training year in 2004. He subsequently went on to obtain his PhD from the National University of Singapore in 2013. His research interest is in infectious diseases. He aims to find more effective ways to tackle the growing problem of multi-drug resistant bacteria, which has serious adverse consequences for patients, doctors and the healthcare system as a whole. The prevalence of multi-drug resistant organisms has been growing in recent years, due to the increased and often inappropriate use of antibiotics. This has significant impact on public health worldwide, as patients are no longer responding to existing antibiotic treatment. Dr Lim’s research aims to solve this problem, through finding the right combination of antibiotics as effective treatment options for such difficult-to-treat infections, in collaboration with healthcare professionals from several hospitals in Singapore. Dr. Lim’s strong passion for research and teaching makes him an effective trainer on the effective use of statistics in re
