Pre-registration Pharmacist Training Programme Opening Ceremony
The annual Pre-registration Pharmacist Training Programme Opening Ceremony took place on 28 June 2014, at LT 32 in National University of Singapore. This event was attended by 165 pre-registration pharmacists as well as preceptors from various training institutions and marked the beginning of an exciting phase for our pre-registration pharmacists. The Programme aims to consolidate knowledge, skills and application to clinical practice. Since the inception of this Programme in 1988, PSS annually organises a series of didactic lectures incorporating case studies to complement the training program delivered in various institutions.
Gracing the event were Ms Ng Hong Yen, Vice President of PSS, Ms Felicia Ling (Executive Secretary from Singapore Pharmacy Council) who gave a briefing on the overall training program, and Dr Chan Hong Ngee (Member, Board of Examiner, SPC) who shared insights on the SPC Competency Standards and Examination.
We would like to wish all all Pre-registration Pharmacists a rewarding and fruitful learning journey!
Updates from the PSS Nursing Home Workgroup
The PSS Nursing Home Workgroup quarterly meeting was held on 10th July 2014. This is the second meeting after 9 May 2014.
Ms. Chung Wing Lam and Ms. Reshma Lhode shared experiences and case studies with all of the pharmacists involved in this programme.
Wing Lam shared her experiences in various homes in the past 2 years. She gave examples of improvements made by pharmacists in nursing homes and also shared on interventions which improved the care of patients in nursing homes.
Reshma shared a case study on the use of quetiapine in geriatric patients. A brief overview of the CATIE-AD and DART trials was shared, followed by a discussion on other pharmacists’ experiences in this area in their own nursing homes.
The PSS Nursing Home Workgroup is currently developing an induction kit for new pharmacists who join the nursing home review taskforce, templates for common nursing home standard operating procedures and also is collating training slides for nursing staff which will be conducted in August to September 2014. They will also create slide sets for training of nursing aids to help them to better cope with their responsibilities.
