Interview with PSS-LF Asia Community Pharmacist of the Year Award 2016 Recipient – Ms Sharene Goh Shiar Yin

The PSS-LF Asia Community Pharmacist of the Year Award recognises leader/role models that have excelled in the practice of Community Pharmacy.

As a committed member of PSS, Ms Sharene Goh is the ex officio of PSS Community Chapter and Assistant Honorary Secretary of the 110th Council of Pharmaceutical Society of Singapore (PSS). Sharene also served as the Vice Chairperson of Singapore Pharmacy Congress 2016.

Under the Community Chapter, Sharene plays a vital role in spearheading the PSS Practice Guide for Minor Ailments. The Guide was launched on 8 October 2016 at the Singapore Pharmacy Congress, aiming to standardise practice across institutions and enhance delivery of pharmaceutical care to patients and consumers in the primary care sector. The Guide, which consists of 14 online continuing education topics for pharmacists, is a great milestone achievement for the Community Chapter. The guide also serves as the foundation to further enhance clinical capability in community pharmacists.

Dedicated to customer service and quality patient care, she clinched the Service Excellence SuperStar Award – the highest accolade awarded by Singapore Retailers Association (2014). She was the recipient of the Pharmacist Health Ambassador Awards (2013 and 2014), featured as one of PSS’s Shining Star (2013), and also received Watson’s Most Caring Pharmacist Award (2012).

As a Cluster Pharmacy Manager in Watsons Singapore, she oversees 8 pharmacies. She is also the Advisor for the Professional Development, Medication Safety and Media Training Teams in Watsons Pharmacy. She is actively involved in community outreach events and article writing. She has contributed a number of health articles for local publications, given public talks and volunteered at various community healthcare events. She is also passionate about the clinical coaching and mentoring of pre-registration pharmacists and undergraduate students.

Sharene strongly believes in the recognition of community pharmacists as valuable members of the healthcare team, and community pharmacists must continue to embrace their evolving roles.

“Community pharmacists can play a greater role in patient care, such as health promotion and public education, management of chronic health conditions and collaborating with the healthcare team to provide holistic patient care.”

She added, “I am really grateful to receive this award. It is a tremendous honour to be acknowledged by PSS, the esteemed and prestigious professional body representing the pharmacy profession in Singapore. I am also thankful for the opportunities to contribute for the patients, profession and the Society. The achievements would not be possible without the support from fellow team members as well as the guidance from mentors and senior Council Members. Let’s continue to work together to raise the profession to greater heights! Together we can achieve more.”

PSS congratulates Sharene on receiving for this well-deserved honour and award for her contributions to the pharmacy profession and for the community. Keep up the good work!
