The Hospital Chapter of the Pharmaceutical Society of Singapore (PSS) organized two inaugural events following requests by pharmacists from different hospital settings. These were :

(a)    Research and Use of Statistics – A workshop by Pharmacists, for Pharmacists on Saturday and Sunday, 4 & 5 January 2014 and

(b)    Pharmacist & the Geriatric Patient – A Discussion Forum by Pharmacists, for Pharmacists on Saturday, 15th February 2014

There was a strong sense of sweet camaraderie and teamwork amongst the 14 PSS Hospital Chapter team members who worked together in their personal time to organize these events. There was also overwhelming interests amongst pharmacists for these two events – all places were filled up!

Event 1 : Research and Use of Statistics – A Workshop by Pharmacists, for Pharmacists

We were privileged to have Ms. Liew Yixin, Principal Clinical Pharmacist and Dr. Lim Tze Peng, Principal Pharmacist of Singapore General Hospital to conduct this workshop. Together, they conducted an excellent workshop and engaged the participants well. Good feedback was received from the participants at the end of the session.

A very big THANK YOU to our speakers, all the participants and the PSS Hospital Chapter members who volunteered to facilitate this session, for making this event a success. PSS would also like to take this opportunity to accord our sincere appreciation to Ngee Ann Polytechnic for sponsoring the venue for this workshop.

Event 2 : Pharmacist & the Geriatric Patient – A Discussion Forum by Pharmacists, for Pharmacists

With the ageing population, pharmacists need to be attuned to the healthcare needs of geriatric patients. Recently, the Pharmacist Specialist Accreditation Board (PSAB) has accredited specialists pharmacists in geriatrics. In this discussion forum, we were privileged to have three accredited geriatrics specialist pharmacists and two other pharmacist practitioners; to share their thoughts on how to build skills and care for our older patient population. They also shared about the Certified Geriatric Pharmacist (CGP) certification and the various services a ‘geriatrics’ pharmacist can provide.

The five speakers who spoke in this forum are :

·       Ms. Low Suat Fern, Principal Pharmacist, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital

·       Ms. Wendy Ang Swee Tee, Principal Clinical Pharmacist, Changi General Hospital

·       Ms. Tan Keng Teng, Principal Pharmacist (Clinical), Tan Tock Seng Hospital

·       Ms. Wan Mei Qi, Senior Clinical Pharmacist, National University Hospital

·       Ms. Lin Huimin, Pharmacist, Changi General Hospital

All the speakers gave very insightful presentations and freely shared their thoughts on care of the geriatric patient. There was also active participation from all the attendees.

Geriatrics Special Interest Group (G-SIG)

The PSS Hospital chapter also launched the Geriatrics Special Interest Group (G-SIG) at this platform and many participants expressed interest in being part of this group. More information will be coming soon regarding the G-SIG. Many thanks go to the speakers, the participants, the sponsors and last but not least, the hospital chapter team members for the success of this forum. Let’s continue to collaborate for better care of our patients!
