Objectives of the Community Chapter

We aim to influence professional practice of community pharmacists to improve health outcome for our patients. We also aim to increase the awareness of the public, government-linked agencies and other stakeholders on the role of community pharmacists in the total healthcare system.

Initiatives/Programmes

The aspiration of the chapter was exemplified in various milestones in recent years.

In May 2006, the Community Chapter launched the P Medicines Programme, which spanned 14 modules, covered common minor ailment management and advocated good dispensing practice for P medicines.

In October 2006, PSS signed a memorandum of understanding between Health Promotion Board to establish Health Ambassador Programme, in which community pharmacists are trained by experts appointed by Health Promotion Board and the effect of training is measured via a documentation programme.

Between October 2006 and December 2009, 9283 patients were counseled.

In January 2010, the memorandum of understanding was renewed. The scope of training was expanded and the emphasis of the clinical activities was shifted from briefing counseling to continuous patient follow-up.

Through the chapter’s effort, documentation of omeprazole dispensing was initiated and omeprazole was reclassified from prescription-only to pharmacy-only status. Reclassification of medicines (from prescription to pharmacy-only status) is a process which will improve access for patients to medicines..
