May 20, 2006 ST Forum Buy drugs only from well-known pharmacies THE article 'Cheaper medicine across the Causeway' (Sunday Times, May 14) featured the experiences of some Singaporeans who travel across the Causeway regularly to stock up their medical supplies. It is heartening to note the people featured in the story have been going to reputable pharmacies. Procuring drugs from unauthorised sources, whether purchased online or on overseas trips, exposes patients to the risk of counterfeit drugs that may be ineffective or harmful. The Singapore Medical Association advises Singaporeans who purchase medicines overseas to buy from established and well-respected pharmacies to ensure that they are buying the genuine products. Getting the right diagnosis but purchasing and consuming counterfeit drugs may result in failure in therapy to the detriment of patients' health. For chronic conditions, patients are recommended to continue regular consultations with their doctors for monitoring of disease progression, disease or drug complications, adjustment of drug dosages and review of drug interactions. Prescription of drugs is only part of the doctor consultation and disease management plan. Dr Raymond Chua
