This year’s Pharmacy Week 2006 was held at the Suntec City The Entertainment Centre Atrium from Oct 19-22. The opening ceremony was graced by Dr. Amy Khor, Mayor of South West CDC.

![]() VIP & invited guests at the opening ceremony The theme “Pharmacists – Walking with You Towards Better Health“ underscores pharmacists’ role in contributing towards the management of minor ailments, maintenance of stable chronic diseases, health promotion, disease prevention and adoption of healthy lifestyle; working hand-in-hand with the public for better health. The event also heralded a closer working relationship with Health Promotion Board with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with to kick start the “Pharmacists Health Ambassadors” programme.

This programme is to further pharmacists, especially those working in the community setting, to be a truly point of contact for primary health care role and complement the functions of other healthcare professional. PSS President, Ng Cheng Tiang, in his welcome speech reiterated the need for pharmacists to position their roles in facing the changing healthcare landscape in Singapore (click here to read the full text of his speech).

To this end, use of medication and supplement based on a sound and scientifically proven evidence remain one of the strongest armamentariums in the modern western medicine. Pharmacists, with expert knowledge in medications and supplements, are naturally an important equation in the health system. The 4-day long event showcased about 20 different booths offering various drugs and disease-related information and advice. There were also various stations where health screening, face-to-face medication review sessions, drugs usage advice etc carried out by volunteer pharmacists from various pharmacies, lecturers and pharmacy students from NUS. Three sessions of public forum was also conducted. The event was very much targeted at family and thus children’s activities like colouring competition, balloon sculpting, freebies etc were given out.

It was a high-profile event which has become one of the most important public-education activities in PSS’ calendar. On behalf of the PSS Council, we’d like to extend our sincere gratitude to the hardworking Organising Committee, the volunteers, helpers, our staff, partners and sponsors.
