For the past 16 consecutive years, Certified Pharmacy Technician Course conducted by PSS has been the de facto certification course in training and accrediting numerous pharmacy technicians from hospitals, retail pharmacies, polyclinic dispensaries, and increasingly the medical clinics. So far, trainees have been hailed from within Singapore health system; but in the past few years, we have been receiving and trained trainees from overseas, particularly from Brunei.
As part of the strategies for pharmacists to better utilize and apply their knowledge and skills, having a well-trained and competent pool of Pharmacy Technicians would certainly be a vital strategy to ensure that Pharmacist in our health system can be relieved of their distributory and supply roles and move up the value-chain in providing more cognitive and advisory services. Likewise, Pharmacy Technicians can be given greater challenges and more value-added services to enrich and enhance their job scope. Thus this will provide a highly collaborative and effective pharmacy practice environment. Funding of the CPTC for Singapore trainees has traditionally been through either the employers’ training budget, with or without SDF support. Therefore, it could be quite a challenge for employers to shoulder the training costs in case there has not been provision made during budgeting. Now with the plan to move the CPTC to fully WSQ accredited programme, funding from the Workforce Development Agency will be available. With the backdrop, PSS is currently working hard to roll out the next CPTC under the accredited scheme. We tentatively hope to recruit the next intake within the October/November 2009 period. Final details will be made available shortly to all the Pharmacy Managers and respective stakeholders. As a teaser, the outline of curriculum under WSQ framework will cover the following modules.
