Nine months ago, we reported in Issue No. 24 of the eBulletin that a new batch of pharmacy graduates started their pre-registration attachment in great anticipation. On 22-Mar-08, 71 pre-regs officially completed this journey to join the workforce as full-fledge pharmacists.

Let the professional journey as pharmacist begin henceforth....

This has been a defining moment not just  for each of the new pharmacists individually, but also to the history of pharmacy in Singapore as this batch represented the pioneers who have successfully completed the Pre-registration Training Programme under the new guideline issued bythe Singapore Pharmacy Board. Under this new guideline, all pharmacy graduates, having obtained their prerequisite professional qualifications from local or recognized overseas pharmacy schools must undergo a structured training programme and to pass an entry-to-practice competency exam.

The completion of the pre-registration training was celebrated with a ceremony held in the honour  of our  71 new colleagues. The event was held at Alexandra Hospital and was hosted by PSS. We also invited one of our Fellow Members -  Dr Tan Weng Mooi, Chief Operating Officer of Institute of Mental Health – to sow some seeds of inspiration and shared her insights with the young pharmacists about what’s being a pharmacists in today’s rapidly changing health system. PSS Immediate Past President and Deputy Head of SGH Pharmacy - Dr Camilla Wong – was also present to grace the occasion and to present awards to the 3 pre-reg pharmacists whose projects have been chosen from the many excellent practice-related research projects. Amidst the many excellent projects, the selection committee has chosen:
1. NUH/Poon Jiat Ling’s project on: Drug Use Evaluation of Meropenem in National University Hospital;
2. SGH/Soong Jielin’s project on: Implementing Evidenced-Based Antiemetic Guidelines in the Haematology Setting; and
3. NHG Pharmacy/Bernadette Lim’s project on: Impact of Pre-registration Pharmacists' Counseling on Patients with Asthma

Also present were the heads of different pharmacies and the Pre-reg Training Committee. On behalf of the PSS Council, we would like to express our gratitude to all preceptors and pharmacists who have helped made this happen. A special thanks to the hardworking Pre-reg Training Committee headed by Mr. Yong Keng Woh for their ceaseless commitment and contribution.

To the newly registered colleagues, welcome to the larger family of pharmacists!
