The opening ceremony of Singapore Pharmacy Congress has always been the occasion to recognize our outstanding pharmacists and pharmacy students. The recently concluded 19th Singapore Pharmacy Congress saw 4 outstanding individuals recognized.

• PSS Student Overseas Enrichment Awards
These Awards are intended to provide the students an opportunity to travel overseas and represent Singapore. They will also have the opportunities to immerse and network with peers and students from different parts of the world, thereby enriching their personal experiences in various aspects. It is a unique opportunity at this stage of student life which will transform their perception and appreciation towards pharmacy and their future professional life. This year’s Awards were presented to Ms. Lauw Xiu Ting and Ms. Ng Xinyi. Both of them are currently Year 2 Pharmacy Student at the National University of Singapore.

• PSS-Shire Hospital Pharmacist of the Year Award
For the PSS-Shire Hospital Pharmacist of the Year Award, the winner was Winnie Lee Hui Ling. Winnie received her pharmacy education from University of London and started working as hospital pharmacist in Singapore General Hospital for 2 years; then moved on to do clinical research work for a short stint of about 1 year. The private sector work didn’t seem to challenge her amply and she decided to return to what she loved most – the hospital pharmacy practice. Winnie has since been with SGH, with special interest in antimicrobial programme, an area which she has contributed significantly to her institution and patients. She has also been volunteering her energy and time helping in the various PSS committees and projects with the Singapore Pharmacy Board.

• Professor Lucy Wan Outstanding Pharmacist Award
The most prestigious pharmacy award, ie. Professor Lucy Wan Outstanding Pharmacist Award 2007 was presented to Ms. Fatimah MK. Fatimah has been an inspiring role model in the pharmacy profession.  She received her pharmacy education from the NUS and advanced further with a Master in Pharmacy (Clinical Pharmacy) from the same institution. She started her career as a pharmacist in National University Hospital and was job-rotated to various functions within the hospital pharmacy department. Having spent about 6 years with NUH, she savoured the commercial world of healthcare industry for a short period before moving on to civil service at National Pharmaceutical Administration for 2 years. The opportunity to restructure the last government hospital then came knocking and she took up the challenge competently and led the Alexandra Hospital Pharmacy Department from the restive, old British military colonial-style hospital to one with a rather upbeat style.  Fatimah has challenged many young pharmacists in her department to provide their best and a number of them have attempted some limits sufficiently - employing a hybrid of professional pharmacy skills, process innovation and experimentation, technology adoptions and lots of networking with different disciplines – to transform the Alexandra Hospital Pharmacy Department to be one of the “Toyotas” of the hospital services, earning worthy mentions from the patients and media alike. She has also been contributing tirelessly to PSS, offering her time, energy and ideas to improve the Society and the profession. Her “can-do” spirit is exemplary and serves as a motivation for others. It was befitting that she was recognized with this honour from Professor Lucy Wan personally.
