• Statins May Cut Risk of Cataracts New research reports that antioxidants in cholesterol-lowering statins may protect the eyes as well as the heart. A study of older adults found those who took statins had nearly a 50% reduced risk of developing cataracts. Oxidative stress is thought to play a role in the development of cataracts, therefore it is plausible that treatment with statins could protect against the common condition. As Reported by MSNBC • Toxic Medicine Traced to China A poisonous solvent purchased from China was unwittingly mixed into drugs, resulting in mass poisonings around the world, the New York Times reports. Diethylene glycol, an industrial solvent and a prime ingredient in antifreeze, was sold by Chinese counterfeiters as pure glycerin-a sweet tasting syrup found in many cough and cold medications. Countries which purchased the product to make medications ended up poisoning their population. Panama is the latest victim, where tainted cold medicine has been linked to 365 reported deaths. None of the glycerin substitute has been reported in the U.S. As Reported by The New York Times
